Facts – The region is often known as ‘the Wakatipu Basin’, referring to Lake Wakatipu and the valley that Queenstown and the lake sit in, carved out by glacial movement around 15 thousand years ago. By the early 1860s, William Rees was established as the first farmer of the Wakatipu. Then gold was discovered and the rush was on. Queenstown transformed overnight and the town was busier than it is today. Although the frenzy was over within a decade, the town had been discovered. Nowadays around 10,000 people call themselves locals, while thousands a year come to visit this stunning, year round, lakeside resort. Today Queenstown can be whatever you want it to be - but it's always a perfect family destination. There's so much to do for you and the kids - and if they're having fun, you're having fun.
