 Facts - Auckland, City of Sails, lies between two harbours and is New Zealand’s largest city with a population of just over a million. The centre of commerce in New Zealand, it's made up of four main suburbs – Auckland City, Manukau City, North Shore City and Waitakere City. The central business district is based around Queen Street in Auckland City and this is where you will find the Sky Tower and main shopping area. Waitakere City has beaches, vineyards and bushwalks and North Shore is best known for its laidback lifestyle and sandy beaches while Manukau city is home to the famous Rainbow’s End theme park. With so much to see and do throughout the area from dormant and extinct volcanoes, beaches and rainforests to shopping, markets and museums, there is plenty to keep everyone entertained! Hauraki Gulf - there are over 50 islands in the the Hauraki Gulf which lies between the Waitemata Harbour and Coromandel Peninsula. The two largest of these islands are Waiheke and Great Barrier Island and these are easy to access by ferry from downtown Auckland. Other islands require permits to land on them. Devonport - only 15 minutes by car, or 10 minutes by ferry from Auckland’s Queen Street, is the historic seaside village of Devonport. Devonport was one of the earliest settled areas of Auckland and here you will find restaurants, shopping and good swimming beaches for the children. The Village Market on the second Sunday of every month features entertainment, crafts and food stalls to entertain the whole family.
